What percent of your household trash do you estimate you are currently able to recycle, including yard waste?

List of Recylables for drop-off bin in Charleston

  • All types of paper, except the plastic coated thin cardboard that frozen dinners come in. Cereal and cracker boxes are acceptable. Church bulletins, newspaper, colored ads, computer paper, magazines, window envelopes (no need to cut out the window).
  • PLEASE COLLAPSE cardboard boxes so they don’t take up so much room in the bin.
  • REMOVE METAL HANDLES attached to plastic buckets
  • Plastic buckets (#7 plastic) such as kitty litter containers. Maximum size is 5 gallons.
  • PP grocery containers (#5 plastic) such as yogurt cups, and narrow neck syrup and ketchup bottles.
  • LDPE grocery containers (#4 plastic) such as margarine tubs, frozen desert cups, six pack rings...
  • PVC narrow neck containers (#3 plastic) such as health and beauty aid products and household cleaners.
  • HDPE containers - milk, water and juice jugs, detergent and fabric softener (#2 clear & colored plastic)
  • PET bottles - soda, water and flavored beverage (#1 clear and green plastic)
  • Glass bottles and jars – clear, brown and green
  • Gable top containers - milk and juice containers
  • Steel Cans and tins
  • Aluminum - cans, trays and foil (must be clean)

Not recyclable in Charleston's recycling drop-off bin

  • auto glass
  • window glass
  • motor oil containers
  • paint cans containing paint
  • plastic buckets w metal handles
  • ceramic tableware
  • plastic film- food wrap, dry cleaning bags
  • expanded foam (Styrofoam)
  • Any type of plastic bag (even if they have the recycle symbol)
